Quietly, the Seattle Mariners have kept themselves alive in the postseason race, entering the week four games behind the Oakland Athletics for the second AL wild-card spot with the teams meeting on Monday in Oakland.
Seattle’s Marco Gonzales is putting together a tremendous stretch with two runs or fewer allowed in each of his last six starts and the team going 7-3 in his last 10 starts overall. In four August starts, he has a 0.67 ERA with just one home run allowed after surrendering seven in July.
The Athletics counter with Paul Blackburn, who has been pressed into the starting rotation due to injuries. In his first start this season against the White Sox, he allowed three runs in 5 ¹/₃ innings. In 12 appearances (nine starts) since the beginning of the 2018 season, Blackburn has an 8.74 ERA with 12 hits allowed and just 6.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
The Athletics entered the week 2-5 in their last seven games, and with the Mariners having gone 6-4 this season against Oakland, these trends that will manifest and continue on Monday.
